The Role
The Director of the new Office of Clinical Translational Research Resources which will facilitate and support the conduct of clinical research studies. In addition to the managerial responsibilities of hiring and managing Office
staff, the Director will have primary responsibility for implementing a program for the recruitment of research participants. The new Office of Clinical Translational Research Resources will also facilitate communications with the Institutional Review Board, provide regulatory consultation regarding FDA rules, intellectual property issues and management of conflicts of interest, and connect researchers with statistical, data management and study design expertise. The Director will critically assess the needs of the research community and facilitate development of infrastructure processes to expedite research on human subjects as well as develop benchmarks for measuring the performance of the department's clinical research program. The position will report to the Chair of the Core Committee with oversight from the Vice Chair of Research.

Currently, there are approximately 20 principal investigators.

Key Challenges
. Development of the infrastructure for the new office, i.e. policies and procedures and staff.
. Development and implementation of a patient recruitment registry.
. Become resource to assist principal investigators with project development and implementation, governmental approvals and Institutional Review Board applications.

Key Responsibilities
. The Director will be responsible for evaluating and reporting the accomplishments and outcomes of the Office's efforts, including successes with grant applications, project implementation, and patient recruitment.

The recruitment resource will include:
. Creation of a registry of potential research subjects
. Collaboration with the institution's data warehouse and information technology department to facilitate recruitment
. Public relations with medical center patients and the community to inform and engage residents regarding participation in research.
. Assist investigators with the development and implementation of recruitment plans for specific studies, such as clinical trials and observational studies
. Development and implementation of recruitment plans that adhere to all regulatory and ethical policies regarding the protection of human subjects.

The Ideal Candidate
The Director of the Office of Clinical Translational Research Resources should bring a mix of experience, talent, style and values that will enable them to succeed in a complex, diverse, environment and assist the Department of Medicine of Boston University Medical Center in maintaining its status as a leading research organization. An ideal candidate will also bring the following professional experience and personal qualities to this important role:

. Doctoral level preferred
. Minimum of 5 years research and administrative experience
. Experience with human subjects research (federal, industry or otherwise supported), and have superb interpersonal and communications skills with the ability to interact effectively and respectfully with faculty investigators, research project staff, regulatory officials locally and nationally, and, most importantly, with potential research subjects including patients and members of the community.
. The candidate should be committed to working with BUMC's ethnically and racially diverse population that is particularly vulnerable to poor health due to poverty, lack of health insurance, or language barriers. Many are recent immigrants, including refugees from war and torture.
. The candidate also needs be aware and sensitive to possible fears and concerns about human subject's research in underserved communities.
. Able to work independently as well as be a successful manager of people and projects.
. Research methods training
. Experience leading human research studies; and implementing or participating in recruitment is desired.
