The Columbia University (CU) and Columbia University Medical Center (CUMC) are committed to excellence in education, research, and patient care. The IRB office currently administers four IRBs, compliance oversight program, and education training initiatives with a staff of 29 individuals. The office manages the review of about 1,400 new protocols a year. CU/CUMC has been committed to the implementation of a state of the art comprehensive human subjects protection program.
The CUMC IRB is now recruiting an IRB Specialist. The IRB Specialist reports to the Team Manager of one of the CUMC IRBs. This staff member will join a team of other professionals who are responsible for conducting pre-review of submissions to all CUMC IRBs. This staff member will regularly attend IRB meetings and also provide support to the IRB Manager, IRB Chairperson, and IRB Members in areas requiring special expertise. The IRB Specialist will also conduct quality control functions for the IRB office in all areas of the operation including drafting and reviewing minutes of the meetings for accuracy and consistency. This staff member will also work with other IRB officers of administration and staff to ensure uniformity of review and compliance with IRB standard operating procedures and applicable federal and state regulations. The IRB Specialist will also serve on relevant IRB administrative committees, such as the Policy Committee and the Education and Training Committee. In addition, this candidate will maintain up to date knowledge of state and federal regulations as well as policies, guidelines and ethical codes related to the protection of human subjects in research.
Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in education, training and/or experience, plus a minimum of two years of prior IRB or related regulatory/research experience. Familiarity with state and federal regulations related to human subjects protection required. Strong interpersonal and writing skills and experience with computerized databases and word processing is essential. Experience with biomedical or behavioral and social sciences human research is preferred. Knowledge of international ethical codes and regulations governing human subjects preferred. Certification as an IRB professional is also preferred.
