Social and Behavioral Sciences Institutional Review Board
The Social and Behavioral Sciences Institutional Review Board (SBS IRB) of the University of
Chicago is charged with ensuring that non-clinical research involving human participants is
conducted in accordance with federal, state, local and University regulations, laws, and policies,
and ethical principles as part of the University’s human protection program. The SBS IRB
reviews all non-clinical research conducted by faculty, students, and staff of the University (with
the exception of research conducted through the School of Social Service Administration and the
Chapin Hall Center for Children) to protect the rights and welfare of humans.
The Director is responsible for the administration of the SBS IRB. This administration includes,
but is not limited to: ensuring compliance with all applicable regulations and policies concerning
human research; directing and managing the activities of the SBS IRB in the aggregate and
individually; organizing and facilitating the submission of research protocols by University
researchers and the review of protocols by the members of the SBS IRB; providing educational
training and outreach programs to members of the University research community; developing
and updating SBS IRB policies and procedures; conducting administrative and expedited reviews
of research protocols in an active and growing research environment; and representing the
University and SBS IRB at regional and national meetings of human subject protections
administrators and policy-makers. The successful candidate will practice creative problem-
solving and respectfully engage with the research community he or she serves.
The Director functions as the direct supervisor of the professional and clerical support staff of the
SBS IRB and is responsible for the development and oversight of the SBS IRB’s budget, in
consultation with the Chair, SBS IRB, and Associate Dean, Administration, of the Social
Sciences Division (SSD).
The Director serves as the primary contact for communications between the SBS IRB and
members of the research community served by the SBS IRB. These communications include
notifications of IRB determinations, consultations concerning individual research protocols, and
public presentations about the policies and procedures of the SBS IRB.
