Executive Director, Office for the Protection of Research Subjects (OPRS)

Northwestern University, a Tier One Research University is seeking qualified applicants for the open position of Executive Director in the Office for the Protection of Research Subjects. The Executive Director, who reports to the Associate Vice President for Research Operations, is a critical member of the management team in Northwestern’s Office for Research. The Executive Director’s primary responsibilities are to effectively manage the OPRS staff supporting the University’s IRBs and IACUC in order to ensure the ongoing delivery of outstanding service to the compliance committees and Northwestern’s research community while maintaining and enhancing compliance with ethical and regulatory requirements.

Scope of the position: The Executive Director will develop and implement the Office’s annual budget of approximately $2.6 million. Active IRB protocols exceed 3,000, and IACUC protocols are approaching 1,000. The Executive Director is expected to possess or build a national presence in human subject protections and/or animal welfare regulatory compliance and to represent the University at state and federal levels, as well as with other major research universities. The successful candidate will be expected to implement the University’s policies and procedures, and the Department’s Standard Operating Procedures in order to prepare for and achieve AAHRPP accreditation in 2010, and to support the University’s longstanding AALAAC accreditation and current good standing with USDA. The Executive Director is responsible for continuing and further developing the post-approval monitoring (QA/QI) functions under the IRB and the IACUC. In addition, the Executive Director will be a local content expert, providing direction, training, and consultation to IRB/IACUC staff, IRB/IACUC members and investigators regarding current issues and ethical concerns. The Executive Director is responsible for five direct reports and a department staff of approximately 26. The Executive Director Chairs the IRB Chairs Committee and serves as an observer/consultant at IRB and IACUC meetings. The Executive Director is also a crucial member of the administrative oversight team responsible for the IRB’s role in the Jesse Brown VAMC Human Subject Protection Program.
