Compliance Administrator
Princeton University seeks a highly motivated, qualified individual to serve as Compliance Administrator in the Office of Research and Project Administration (ORPA). This newly established position presents a unique and challenging opportunity to support and advance the University's world-class research enterprise.
Duties and Responsibilities
The successful candidate will bring to the University an exceptional background in research administration -- including knowledge of compliance regulations, and issues. S/he will have outstanding interpersonal skills, a collaborative style, and a reputation for successfully working with faculty and departmental staff to assist in the implementation of new policies, procedures and programs.
The Research Compliance Office -- part of the University's Office of Research and Project Administration -- is responsible for formulating and implementing research compliance programs in accordance with federally mandated regulations and Princeton University's policies. Among other areas, the office ensures compliance and promotes ethical conduct of research in the areas of Institutional Review Board for human subject (IRB), Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC), and Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC).
- As a direct report to the Associate Director of Research Compliance, coordinates research compliance matters for the Office of Research and Project Administration (ORPA) including the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC), the Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC), and the Institutional Review Board for Human Subjects (IRB).
- Interacts with Principal Investigators and other researchers regarding IACUC, IRB, IBC protocol and policy.
- Attends all committee meetings. Takes, drafts, and distributes meeting minutes.
- Reviews responses to feedback for protocols submitted to the IRB and IACUC monthly meetings and follows-up on outstanding responses.
- Administers the IRB mailbox, including responding to incoming messages and archiving printed documents.
- Maintains Coeus (IRB) and Granite (IACUC) databases to track all active, pending, and terminated protocols/proposals.
- Supports faculty committees in carrying out other compliance activities (e.g. IACUC semi-annual program reviews and facility site-inspections, AAALAC accreditation visits, USDA inspections).
- Understands the mission and needs of ORPA, including service to the faculty and a thorough understanding of how federal requirements relate to University compliance goals.
- Supports the development and implementation of new processes in the compliance area.
- Works effectively and collaboratively with Laboratory Animal Resources, the Office of Environmental Health and Safety, and research and administrative staff.
- Consults with executives on management of long range planning projects to address both current and anticipated needs of the University's compliance program requirements.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree.
- Minimum of five years' experience working in research compliance environment in higher education or a related field.
- An understanding of animal care and biosafety issues highly desirable.
- Sound judgment, thoughtfulness, and the attention to detail necessary.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills and ability to interact effectively with faculty and other researchers.
- Computing proficiency, and the ability to create and manage databases.
- Evidence of self-motivation and must have the ability to work both independently and within a team.
- Willingness to train and accept responsibilities for meeting guidelines.
- Readiness to learn new techniques and operating procedures.
- Ability to handle multiple assignments and changing priorities as circumstances may dictate.
- Ability to understand and interpret federal rules and regulations.
- Understanding of research compliance topics and government requirements.
- Experience and ability to develop and implement policies and procedures.
- Experience and ability to manage staff.
- Ability to plan and schedule multiple projects.
- Demonstrated ability to take initiative and identify, prioritize and plan activities necessary to meet department goals.
- Ability to innovate and problem solve.
- Excellent project management skills and the ability to work on several projects at once with minimum supervision.
- Evidence of successful experience in a customer service role
- Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to communicate effectively with a variety of people at all levels.
- High degree of personal integrity and ethics with uncompromising standards.
- Flexible, tactful and diplomatic.
- Proven ability to form partnerships with faculty to accomplish compliance objectives.
- A commitment to professional development and ability to travel to national and regional meetings for training, updates, networking, and making presentations.
Preferred:
- Knowledge of federal rules and regulations regarding human subjects, animal care and biosafety is highly desirable, particularly at a higher educational setting.
- PRIM&R Certified Professional IACUC Administrator (CPIA®).
- PRIM&R Certified IRB Professional (CIP®).
- Knowledge of the Coeus application.
- Knowledge of the Granite application.
- Experience conducting training or educational workshops in an academic setting.
- Membership in professional organizations.
