Journal of Bioethical Inquiry
Position description
Associate Editor Research Ethics
The Journal of Bioethical Inquiry (JBI) is an international, peer-reviewed scholarly journal of bioethics established in 2004 and published by Springer in both print and on-line forms. It aims are:
• to foster an interdisciplinary approach to bioethics by publishing original research at the intersection of ethics, social theory, philosophy, law and other disciplines;
• to represent the variety of contemporary perspectives on ethical issues in health and medicine;
• to seek new approaches to old problems; and
• to identify common ground by creating a forum for dialogue across conventional academic disciplinary and other boundaries.
The JBI publishes articles that increase theoretical understanding of ethical issues in medicine and health care, the health professions and the biological sciences as well as articles reporting qualitative and quantitative empirical research. The JBI also provides a forum for critical reflections on medicine and conventional bioethics, the nature of health, illness and disability, the sources of ethics, the nature of ethical communities, and possible implications of new developments in science and technology for social and cultural life and human identity, among other foundational and groundbreaking issues. The JBI seeks to explore the legal dimensions of contemporary bioethical issues and encourages contributions that are at the interface of law, ethics and health care. It particularly welcomes contributions from perspectives and geographic locations that are less commonly represented in other journals in the field. Additionally, the JBI offers a series of regular features, including discussions of clinical cases with bioethical implications (In That Case), book, film and art reviews, and a ‘recent developments’ section that introduces changes in law pertaining to bioethical issues.
The JBI moved from three issues to four issues per year at the beginning of 2008 and aims to publish one special thematic issue a year and one thematic symposium per issue. The JBI was founded by the Australasian Bioethics Association (ABA), the Australian and New Zealand Institute for Health Law and Ethics (ANZIHLE) and the Otago Bioethics Centre and is owned by an incorporated association managed by members of the founding associations who comprise the Management Committee. Members of the ABA and ANZIHLE receive a subscription to the JBI as part of their membership.
The JBI is seeking one or more individuals to fulfil the role of Associate Editor of Research Ethics. Associate Editors are central to the function and purpose of the JBI. Through engagement with the Editors in Chief, the Editorial Board and the academic community, the Associate Editors guide the growth and development of the journal and contribute to the breadth, depth and sophistication of its content. The Associate Editors of Research Ethics will provide assistance with the acquisition of new material and the editing and review of submitted manuscripts within their field of expertise. Associate Editors are supported by the Managing Editor, the Editorial Board, the Executive Committee and the Copy Editor and report to the Editors in Chief. An Associate Editor’s key roles and responsibilities are outlined below.

• Upon receipt of the manuscript, the Associate Editor will usually invite reviewers and send the paper to them.
• The Associate Editor will critically assess both the manuscript and the reviews.
• The Associate Editor will then submit a recommendation and rationale to the Editors in Chief.
• The Editors in Chief will then make the final decision regarding publication and complete the correspondence with the authors.
2. Invitation to submit manuscripts to the JBI
Encouragement of submission of high-quality, scholarly manuscripts of various kinds, including the following:
• Original research.
