The University of California, Irvine (UCI) is seeking an Assistant Director of Human Research Protections
GENERAL SUMMARY OF POSITION:
The Assistant Director, under the general direction of the Director of Research Protections (RP), is the primary manager within Research Administration (RA) responsible for the operations of the Human Research Protection (HRP) unit. UCI has three IRBs (two dedicated to clinical research, the other dedicated to social & behavioral research) and over 2000 active studies.
RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:
• Manage the recruitment, hiring, orientation and professional development of the Human Research Protections (HRP) Teams (4 Teams of 3 FTE each) including but not limited to, day-to-day supervision, setting unit goals and objectives, implementing team-building strategies, employing outcome measures to evaluate goal attainment including individual and team benchmarks, evaluating staff.
• Ensure staff possesses current, expert knowledge of applicable federal regulations, state statutes, UC policies and procedures, and UCI RA policies and procedures as they relate to the management and administration of human research protections.
• Develop and maintain standard operating procedures/manuals/guides to assist the HRP staff in performing their duties.
• Guide the HRP staff in problem solving and decision making by facilitating problem solving meetings that result in the implementation of effective and creative solutions.
• Establish and maintain effective, productive and collaborative working relationships and communications with regulatory compliance committees and groups outside of the Office of Research (e.g., Radiation Safety Committee, Institutional Biosafety Committee, and Clinical Trials Protocol Review and Monitoring Committee, etc.), as well as human research protections staff from other UC campus and key offices and individuals at the UC Office of the President (in particular with representatives from the Research Policy and Analysis, and the Principal Counsel).
QUALIFICATIONS INCLUDE:
• Masters degree in a related field or an equivalent combination of education and experience within human research administration.
• Demonstrated expert-level, working knowledge of current regulations, laws, including but not limited to, Common Rule and Subparts, FDA regulations, the regulations of other HHS entities including DoD, DOE, Civil Rights, CA statutes, as well as a wide range of human research protections procedures, practices and concepts.
• Expert knowledge of generally accepted human subjects research practices across a broad spectrum of academic disciplines.
• Excellent leadership skills and demonstrated experience in supervising personnel, including the ability to train staff and employ team-building techniques.
• Ability to quickly analyze complex information using logic and reasoning to define problems, identify patterns, tendencies and relationships, formulate logical and objective conclusions and recognize alternatives and their implications.
• Strong writing and editing skills; ability to write and format professional correspondence, reports, and support documentation.
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills; assertiveness tempered by diplomacy, tact, and sensitivity for extensive contact with faculty, management, staff, and the general public.
• Ability to prioritize fluctuating workloads and maintain high productivity levels in the face of changing priorities and frequent interruptions.
• Certified IRB Professional (CIP) or equivalent certification
