Director, Business Development, Communications, and Public Relations

Organization
Located in Washington, D.C., the Association for the Accreditation of Human Research Protection Programs, Inc. (AAHRPP) promotes high-quality research through an accreditation process that helps organizations worldwide strengthen their human research protection programs (HRPPs).

An independent and growing non-profit accrediting body, AAHRPP uses a voluntary, peer-driven, educational model to ensure that HRPPs meet rigorous standards for quality and protection. To earn accreditation, organizations must provide tangible evidence—through policies, procedures, and practices—of their commitment to scientifically and ethically sound research and to continuous improvement.

As the "gold seal," AAHRPP accreditation offers assurances—to research participants, researchers, sponsors, government regulators, and the general public—that an HRPP is focused first and foremost on excellence.

Position
AAHRPP is aggressively expanding its outreach to the U.S. and international research enterprise. Develops and manages all marketing, communications, and public relations functions to further AAHRPP’s mission of accrediting high-quality human research protection programs. Responsibilities include managing the image and brand identity, developing annual communications and marketing/business development plans, overseeing all communications activities, handling media relations, interacting and developing partnerships with other research and related organizations and working with accredited organizations. The Director reports to the President and CEO of AAHRPP.

Description of Responsibilities

• Manage AAHRPP’s image and brand identity to represent the organization in a consistent manner.

• Develop an annual business development plan including communications, marketing, and media relations plans to coordinate all activities.

• Through research and networking, continuously identify potential accreditation applicants and manage communications with the potential applicants.

• Oversee the creation and implementation of all communications including:
o The quarterly newsletter - AAHRPP Advance;
o Brochures and other collateral materials;
o Web site;
o Stationery package;
o Exhibits and other conference materials; and
o Internet and new media.

• Manage a media relations function to increase the visibility of AAHRPP and accreditation.

• Develop opportunities to promote AAHRPP’s mission within the research organization environment

• Work with accredited organizations or organizations seeking accreditation to:
o Provide assistance on promoting accreditation within their organizations;
o Coordinate external promotion of accreditation;
o Determine innovative practices in promoting accreditation; and
o Gather testimonials on the benefits of accreditation.

• Manage staff and outside vendors.

• Evaluate effectiveness of all communications and marketing activities.


Skills Required

• Ability to create and manage a complex business development, communications, and public relations program independently.

• Outstanding organizational and time management skills.

• Excellent interpersonal, writing, and presentation skills.

• Creative thinker and problem solver.

• Demonstrated maturity to interact with media, AAHRPP Board of Directors, and leadership at major research institutions.


Qualifications

• Termination degree in marketing, communications, or research-related discipline.

• At least 10 years blended experience in research, research compliance, research oversight, marketing, communications, education, or management.
