 Executive Director, IRB -- New York, NY

The position presents an opportunity for an individual with a commitment to the ethical conduct of research and outstanding credentials to take a leadership role as the Executive Director (ED) of the IRB at a distinguished psychiatric research institution and department of psychiatry. The ED will report to the Deputy Director for Research, New York State Psychiatric Institute/Vice Chairman for Research Administration, Ethics and Policy, Columbia University Department of Psychiatry.

Duties:
As Executive Director of the IRB, the individual will have primary operational and oversight responsibility for the Institutional Review Board and IRB Office. Working in consultation with the IRB chair(s), the ED will develop, refine and maintain policies and procedures to meet relevant local, state and federal regulatory requirements and will foster expertise, efficiency and innovation within the human subjects protections program. The ED will be responsible for the management and operation of the IRB office and will work closely with IRB’s Administrative Director to ensure efficient and effective day to day operation of the IRB office. The ED will manage institutional preparation for planned AAHRPP accreditation.

The individual will also provide regulatory and administrative support to the NYSPI Ethics Advisory Board (EAB), the department’s conflict of interest committee. This role will involve developing, refining and maintaining policies and procedures in consultation with the EAB and appropriate institutional officials.

Through the development and coordination of education and training programs and materials, the ED will work to enhance an institutional culture that promotes the highest ethical standards for the conduct of research. He/she will develop and report on quality metrics related to IRB activities and performance. He/she will oversee IRB monitoring activities and act as liaison between IRB, EAB, Grants Administration, the Clinical Director’s Office, and the Office of Quality Management. He/she will oversee the implementation and refinement of the electronic application submission system.
The ED will provide liaison to oversight and compliance functions at affiliated and collaborating institutions and organizations including Columbia University’s IRB, Clinical Trials Office, Radiation Safety, NYS Office of Mental Health and the Research Foundation for Mental Hygiene, Inc.

Qualifications:

Demonstrated leadership experience in human subjects protections and research ethics related to the conduct or oversight of clinical research, with at least five years of IRB leadership experience.

• Strong leadership, staff management and operational skills.

• Demonstrated ability to adopt and incorporate new technologies.

• Demonstrated abilities, including the analytic skills necessary to research, develop and refine IRB and COI committee infrastructure, policies and procedures.

• CIP certification preferred

• Experience with psychiatric/mental health research preferred

Salary: Salary Range: $115,000-140,000
