Freshman Sign-up: Auschwitz-Birkenau

Boulder, Colo. — To build awareness and attendance for Holocaust Awareness Week, Feb. 26 through March 2, at Univ. of Colorado, Boulder, advertising agency TDA ADVERTISING & DESIGN, Boulder, created a campaign that matter of factly puts the unsuspecting viewer in the shoes of a Holocaust victim.

Three paper sign-up sheets, indistinguishable from the scores of lab volunteer recruitment efforts that dot the campus, offer students the chance to participate in yet another series of experiments, these involving burns, bone removal, and air-deprivation. Only halfway into the recruitment effort, after the outrage has settled in, do readers understand that they are being asked to “Please join us for Holocaust Awareness Week.”

The campaign aims to surprise. In developing it, TDA creative director Jonathan Schoenberg found that the disinformation put out by Holocaust deniers was not as big factor as simple lack of information. “Many Coloradoans, and especially people under 25, know little more about the Holocaust than its 6 million death toll. The “medical” and “science” atrocities come as a complete shock.”

Creative credits go to CD/CW, Jonathan Schoenberg; ADs, Ian Tulk and Brizida Ahrnsbrak; and CWs, Mike King, Justin Horrigan and Brad Phifer.

Holocaust Awareness Week, with speakers, films and a reading of names, is organized by Hillel Colorado, Boulder. For event details contact Rabbi Adam Naftalin-Kelman, director, 303/442-6571 or www.colorado.edu/studentgroups/haw.

TDA Advertising & Design is a creative-focused advertising agency with $25 million billings from clients including, among others, Chipotle Mexican Grill, Cloudveil, Thule, Human Touch, General Electric, Timberland, Titus bicycles and Fox Racing Suspension.
