2008 SRA SYMPOSIUM
GENERAL ANNOUNCEMENT

The Society of Research Administrators International is pleased to inaugurate activities for the annual Symposium taking place as part of the SRA International meeting on October 9-13 Gaylord National Resort & Convention Center, National Harbor Maryland which is in the Washington, D.C. area (National Capitol Region).

General Information and Open Submission Policy:

SRA strongly encourages research administration and related colleagues to begin considering items for potential submission as papers, posters, abstracts or institutional milestones of achievement. Submission for the SRA Symposium is not limited to SRA membership. Submission is open to any individual, whether a research administrator or not, whose scholarly or professional interest would be related to research management. Topics are encouraged from any areas related to research administration specializations (e.g. pre-award processes, post-award processes, strategic planning, financial management, computer science, research ethics, human research, animal research, intellectual property, technology transfer, publication standards, human resources management etc).

Contributed Papers and Posters:

This year SRA continues its traditions for the publication and presentation of contributed papers and professional posters designed to advance and enrich the body of knowledge of research administration and management as an art and science. Directions for papers and posters will remain essentially the same as in previous years.

Abstracts:

The Society is continuing but renaming its “futures-proposals” entries that would be initiated for but remain in progress past the 2008 National Capitol Region meeting. Analogous with the practices of other professions, Symposium Abstracts are summaries of project activities (academic, professional, case studies etc) that are emerging for potential consideration in 2009 as future papers or posters. Abstracts are designed to foster in-process collaboration, networking, and professional development between research management colleagues both within and without SRA.

Milestones *New*:

The Symposium welcomes poster-style displays shaped by institutions that present significant accomplishments and achievements of excellence regarding research administration processes, programs, or products. The purpose of Symposium Milestones is to allow research administration related institutions to market and advertise for community recognition significant achievements of research administration colleagues. Milestones present an important new avenue of enrichment. By sharing milestones and achievements, the Symposium aspires to spur programmatic innovation among all SRA colleagues and their institutions throughout the world. It is possible that Milestones can also be displayed along lines traditionally associated with exhibits or booths. Logistical and procurement requirements for these types of Milestones displays must be accomplished with SRA Headquarters guidance. Contact the Symposium Program Director or Milestones Coordinator for further details.

Individual Calls:

The Calls for papers, posters, abstracts, and milestones will be made according to an individually designed schedule beginning in the February/March time frame and ending in late August/early September. The individual Calls will be announced on the SRA website and through various other forums etc.

Competition and Awards:

Papers, Posters, Abstracts, and Milestones will be eligible for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place awards for Best Paper of the Year, Best Poster, Abstract and Milestone of the Year respectively. Awards will be announced after the October 2008 meeting with awards being presented at the 2009 Annual International Meeting in Seattle.
Processes:

Submission, review, selection, and consideration for publication, as well as award competitions, will be processed through a series of successive panels under Symposium Executive Staff.
